Center-Hill-Lake
is nestled in the Cumberland Mountains of central Tennessee. This crystal clear lake has three beautiful waterfalls, rocky bluffs and unspoiled natural beauty. The lake is popular for fishing and boating, swimming, water skiing, picnicking, camping and hiking. Center Hill Lake was constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1949 and extends 64 miles upstream and covers an area of over 18,000 acres. The lake has 415 miles of shoreline, and has three state parks and eight recreational areas that are run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Surrounded by the gently rolling hills of Smith, Putnam, DeKalb, Warren and White Counties, Center Hill Lake is well-known for its' excellent fishing. Smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, trout, spotted bass and three types of crappie are found here. The Tennessee State record spotted bass was caught in Center Hill Lake in 1989 and weighed 5-lbs. 8 oz.! The nearby towns of Smithville, Alexandria, Liberty and Dowelltown offer visitors to Center Hill Lake lodging and restaurants and all the necessary services. The town of Smithville is home to the annual "Fiddlers' Jamboree and Craft Festival, usually held the first weekend in July.

The varied topography topography plays a significant role in Tennessee's climate. The Cumberland Plateau, at approximately 2,000 feet above sea level, runs northeast-southwest across the state in a belt about 50 miles wide. The climate is generally warm and humid in summer and cold, but not frigid in winter. Precipitation is evenly distributed throughout the year. Severe storms are relatively infrequent, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes. An average of 11 tornadoes are observed in the state each year, mostly confined to areas west of the Cumberland Plateau. Hailstorms occur 2 or 3 times a year. Thunderstorms are frequent in the warm season, and severe thunderstorms with damaging winds are experienced at scattered locations throughout the state each year.
