Reelfoot-Lake
is the name of a lake and a state park, located in the northwest corner of the state, known to be one of the best hunting and fishing preserves in the country. There is an interesting legend about how the lake came to be; history has it that a series of earthquakes during the bitter cold winter of 1811-1812 created landslides that swept down the bluffs, and large areas of land were uplifted, while others sank. One of the sunken areas filled with water and thus Reelfoot Lake was born. The lake encompasses 25,000 acres and is home to almost every kind of shore and wading bird, as well as the Golden and American Bald Eagles. Reelfoot Lake State Park is comprised of 280 acres, broken into 10 segments located along 22 miles of the lake's shoreline. A visitor and interpretive center is located along State Highways 21 and 22. The park contains campgrounds, fishing piers, canoeing, horseshoes, several playgrounds, tennis courts and picnic areas. No water skies or jet skies are allowed on Reelfoot Lake - it's known for its' peaceful fishing and birding opportunities. Several special events are held in the park during the year, including two-hour bus tours beginning January 2 through March, when visitors can observe bald eagles and other waterfowl. A wide variety of other programs are also offered during the winter months. From May through September, experienced naturalists offer three-hour pontoon boat cruises to view the area. Shorter cruises are available on weekends and holidays, and sunset cruises are offered several times per month, while moonlight cruises are offered during the full moon.

Reelfoot Lake Weather & Climate

The Northwestern corner of the state enjoys four mild seasons. Like most of the state, summers tend to be warm and humid and winters are mild and wet. The highly varied topography has a significant impact on the climate of the state, and temperatures vary according to elevation. Expect it to be 10 - 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops. The principal source of moisture for the state comes from the Gulf of Mexico to the south, with a gradual decrease as it tracks south to north. Rainfall is pretty evenly distributed in northwestern Tennessee throughout the year, but thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. An average of 11 tornadoes are observed in the state each year, mostly confined to areas west of the Cumberland Plateau, but most types of severe weather miss the state entirely.
