Tims-Ford-Lake
is located in Franklin and Moore Counties in the rolling hills of south central Tennessee. The dam for the lake is located on the Elk River at river mile 133.3 in Franklin County. Construction on Tims Ford Dam began in 1966 and the reservoir began filling in December 1970. However, long before that, this area was used extensively by the Indians and archaeological excavations have uncovered numerous artifacts, indicating man had occupied this area as much as 10,000 years ago. Today, Tims Ford Lake covers 10,700 acres and has a shoreline of 246 miles, with five miles of that belonging to islands that are situated in the lake. It is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the state and has excellent fishing, boating, swimming and camping opportunities. In fact, Tims Ford Lake is regarded as one of the very best bass fishing and recreational lakes in the Southeast. A state park is located at the lake and offers a marina and boat launching dock and ramp, five miles of paved trails for hiking and biking, picnic facilities, a recreation hall, playgrounds, ball fields and horseshoes. In addition to the lake, Tims Ford State Park features an L-shaped swimming pool that is one of the largest in the Tennessee State Park system. It includes a 12-foot diving pool, childrens wading pool and a bathhouse. Vacation rental cabins are situated on the wooded slopes around Tims Ford Lake and a 52-site campground is also located inside the state park.

South Central Tennessee has a mild four season climate. The principal source of moisture comes from the Gulf of Mexico to the south, which results in a gradual decrease of precipitation from south to north. The Cumberland Plateau Region averages 50-55 inches of precipitation each year, with the greatest in winter and early spring. Thunderstorms are common in spring and summer. Average snowfall averages 12 inches statewide but due to the relatively mild conditions, it rarely persists for more than a few days. Summers are usually warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the high mountain regions. Severe weather, such as tornadoes or blizzards, is almost unheard of in the state, although severe thunderstorms with damaging winds are experienced at scattered locations throughout the region each year.
