Greeneville
is Tennessee's second oldest town, located northeast of Knoxville in eastern part of the state. This small rural town has one of the richest historical backgrounds of any town in the state. Named after Revolutionary War General Nathaniel Greene, Greeneville was also the home of the 17th President, Andrew Johnson. His home, tailor shop, a visitor center and national cemetery, where Johnson is buried, are open to the public. The town of Greeneville, in Greene County, is also the birthplace of Davy Crockett, which has become a State Historic Area. The town also served as the capital of the "Lost State of Franklin" in 1785-88. It is also the only town in the United States that pays tribute to both the Union and the Confederacy in its courthouse square! Greeneville sits in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is near the Nolichuckey River, which has hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, golf and excellent fishing at nearby Cherokee Lake. It is also just a short drive to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and all the tourist attractions in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

The Mountains of northwestern North Carolina has a variable weather pattern depending on the elevation. Temperatures usually run 10 to 25 degrees cooler in the higher elevations than in the valleys below. Spring has mild days and cool nights with some rainy days. Summer is warm and humid with scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rarely rise above 90 degrees in this region (or above 80 at elevations of 5,000 feet or higher.) Conditions begin to cool down by October, and this is also the best month to view the spectacular fall foliage. In winter, the high mountains protect the outlying areas, so there is seldom a major snowfall. Highs run in the 40s and 50s. Although snow in winter is likely, most ski resorts rely on snowmaking equipment because daytime highs can often hover in the 40-degree range.
