Johnson-City
is located northeast of Knoxville near the Cherokee National Forest. Voted by Money Magazine in 1996 as "the best place to live in the Southeast," Johnson City is a clean, safe city, proud of its southern heritage. This growing town lies in a beautiful mountain valley of eastern Tennessee, and has 19 city parks and 5 recreation areas for visitors to enjoy. Also, inside the city limits, you'll find tennis courts, several athletic fields, 2 swimming pools and golf. Just a short drive takes you to the Nolichucky River and Cherokee Lake for fishing and boating, swimming, hiking and biking. The Tipton-Hayes Historical Site in Johnson City was the home to statesmen of the American Revolution through the Civil War, and a battle over the formation of the "State of Franklin" was fought here. The site includes a small museum and visitor center. For more historical sites, a short drive southwest of Johnson City takes you to the town of Greeneville, birthplace of Davy Crockett and home of the 17th President, Andrew Johnson. Another interesting place for the whole family to visit in Johnson City is the Hands On! Regional Museum. This museum has entertaining and educational hands on displays, such as a walk through an ark with exotic animals, a coal mine, a replica of a Tennessee Valley Authority dam - visitors can even fly an airplane. Other points of interest near Johnson City include the Bristol Motor Speedway and Bristol Caverns, the Cumberland Gap National Historic Park and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The climate of the northeastern Tennessee mountains is temperate with moderately cold winters and warm, humid summers. Precipitation is fairly well distributed throughout the year; as there is no distinct wet or dry seasons. October has the least rainfall, July the most. Snowfall is quite variable from year to year, and some winters have relatively little. Thunderstorms occur anytime of the year, but are most frequent in spring and summer. Summer temperatures are rarely extreme, but the high humidity often makes it seem hotter than it actually is. Snow is minimal in Tennessee except in the higher mountain regions. Severe storms are infrequent in the state, being east of the center of tornado activity, south of most blizzard conditions, and too far inland to be affected by hurricanes.
