Sweetwater is located in Monroe County in east Tennessee, southwest of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Tellico Lake and Watts Bar Lake are located nearby. Less than an hour from the cities of Knoxville and Chattanooga, the Sweetwater area is quiet and tranquil, with one third of the county comprised of the Cherokee National Forest. There are 189 miles of trails for hikers, bicycling and horseback riding. Other area recreational opportunities include swimming, boating and fishing, canoeing and kayaking, rock climbing, golf, hunting, birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Monroe County is also considered the gateway to the gorgeous Cherohala Skyway. A drive along this scenic highway will take you through the Cherokee National Forest, along the Tellico River and past cascading waterfalls and hills full of blossoming Rhododendrons. However, the main attraction in the town of Sweetwater is The Lost Sea, part of the Craighead Caverns cave system. This unusual landmark is America’s largest underground lake and the second largest in the world. It’s been designated a Registered National Landmark, and no one really knows exactly how large it is because part of it is in completely submerged “rooms” that no one has been able to fully explore. A guided walk through many of the caves and glass bottom boat tours are available on The Lost Sea. There are many other attractions within an easy day’s drive of Sweetwater, including Lookout Mountain, Rock City Gardens, Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Sweetwater Weather & Climate

The Knoxville Region in eastern Tennessee is in a temperate climate zone. The summers are always warm and humid and the winters are brief and mild. Spring arrives early and stays for a long time and is alive with dogwoods, azaleas and other beautiful flowers. The average annual temperature for the region is 60 degrees F. The average annual snowfall for the entire state is 12 inches, and with the mild climate, snow rarely stays on the ground for more than a few days. Severe weather is rare since the state is east of the center of tornado activity, south of most winter blizzard conditions and too far inland for hurricanes. Hailstorms occur maybe two or three times per year. Thunderstorms are common in late spring and summer.
