Ocoee River is a river in southeast Tennessee that held great importance for both the Cherokee and Creek Indians. Today, it has become one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the United States. Located in the Cherokee National Forest, the Ocoee River is a tributary of the Hiwassee River, which join together in Polk County, near the town of Benton. The whitewater slalom events of the 1996 Summer Olympics were conducted on a one-mile whitewater course on the Ocoee. The river has also been rated “one of the ten best whitewater rivers in the country” by Canoe Magazine. The Ocoee River flows through a spectacular gorge and provides over twenty continuous rapids and miles of fun for visitors. The river is separated into thee parts: The Upper Ocoee is the Olympic course, the Middle Ocoee is the site of commercial rafting and the Lower Ocoee (below Parksville Lake Dam) is great for a lazy tube ride. Besides rafting, other activities in the area include canoeing, kayaking, fishing, camping, hiking and biking. The Ocoee River sees some 250,000 visitors per year. Other Polk County attractions include historic sites, antique and specialty shops, museums and the Hiwassee River Rail Adventure, a thrilling 50-mile round trip up the lower Hiwassee River gorge.

Ocoee River Weather & Climate

Southeastern Tennessee has a temperate climate with four seasons. Winters are generally short and mild, and summers are warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the high mountain regions. Rain is common year round. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March with warmer weather and flowering trees and shrubs. Summer arrives full force in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Fall brings mild days and crisp evenings, along with brilliant foliage colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall color change. Severe weather, such as tornadoes or blizzards, is rare in the state of Tennessee.
