Ducktown is nestled within the Cherokee National Forest along the Ocoee River in Polk County, Tennessee. It began as a copper mining town in the mid-1800s, and today the whole town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Ducktown Basin Museum offers seasonal tours of the Burra Burra Mine Shops and Change House, as well as exhibits of the mining heritage of the copper basin. A reconstructed chimney near the museum is what remains of the first copper mine in Ducktown. The area around Ducktown offers a wide variety of activities, including whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River and hiking and horseback riding adventures in the Appalachian Mountains. There are packages for individuals, as well as for families and groups. The Ocoee River has been rated by Canoe Magazine as one of the ten best whitewater rivers in the country, and has been the site of several national whitewater championships. Other outdoor recreation available in the Ducktown area includes golf, lakes for swimming, boating and fishing, water skiing, panning for gems and gold, and exploring neighboring antiques shops and flea markets.

Ducktown Weather & Climate

Southeastern Tennessee has a temperate climate with four seasons. Winters are generally short and mild, and summers are warm and humid, with cooler temperatures in the high mountain regions. Rain is common year round. The average annual snowfall for the state is 12 inches. Spring comes in early March with warmer weather and flowering trees and shrubs. Summer arrives full force in the region by mid May, bringing warm weather and higher humidity. The mountains of eastern Tennessee are a great place to escape the hot summer temperatures as the higher elevation cools the air slightly. Fall brings mild days and crisp evenings, along with brilliant foliage colors. Mid to late October is a good time to visit the region to experience the fall color change. Severe weather, such as tornadoes or blizzards, is rare in the state of Tennessee.
